Auburn University College of Education

The Challenges

  • To re-design and develop a new web interface that improved the College's online presence, addresses the information and resource needs of current students, potential students, and other interested parties located anywhere in the world.
  • To incorporate usability features to address cross-browser functionality, visual impairment, site optimization for bandwidth and handicapped enabled browsers.
  • To provide the College with cost-effective content management solutions so that non-technical users can update and maintain the web property.
  • To develop a site design structure that is visually appealing, incorporates functionality and ease of navigation.
  • To help with the College's online brand strength, increase site traffic, and increase user satisfaction.

Content Management Solutions

With an increased need for expanded and updated content on web pages, the need for technical experts to create and add information to a web page has increased dramatically. The College purchased content management software to assist with the ever increasing demand for adding new information to the site. Through the use of a content management system, non-technical content contributors are able to add information to the site as easily as they can create a word processor document or send an e-mail. Training on the content management software was provided by Virticle.

Site Structure and Continuity

The goal was to achieve continuity in both the visual and textual aspects of the College of Education web site. Through the use of specially designed templates, each page on the site "fits" with all of the other pages. The basic page layout, color schemes and text provide a continuous theme for the web presence. Each department, center or program has a portal or "front" page template where general information is presented in a similar manner. Although it is encouraged, departments and programs do not have to use the templates provided in the content management system. If a department/program prefers to keep its individual design, a link to its page is provided on the portal page of that department/program.
